Lake Michigan is an outstanding natural resource of global significance! As the second largest Great Lake and 5th largest freshwater lake in the world, Lake Michigan provides many things to the 12,000,000 people within its basin. Lake Michigan provides drinking water, recreational opportunities, wetlands and wildlife, critical dunes and pristine shorelines, vital industries and hundreds of thousands of jobs. Lake Michigan also provides solitude and reflection to those who seek it; a time capsule for those who want to visit the past; and a glimpse of what is to come.

Unfortunately, Lake Michigan is under stress and in need of special attention. It is up to us, the citizens of the Lake Michigan basin, to balance the three fundamental elements – environmental integrity, economic vitality and sociocultural well-being.

Every resident of the Lake Michigan Basin IS a Lake Michigan Manager, with the responsibility of ensuring a healthy and resilient ecosystem and economical viable community that meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the needs of future generations.
